Finding Meaning Through Gentle Leadership — A Conversation with Nicky Luo
The Melbourne Venture Club (UMVC) had the honour of hosting Nicky Luo, former Mayor of Monash — the first Chinese-Australian woman to hold this role. From psychotherapist to public servant, Nicky’s journey embodies long-term purpose, empathy, and the quiet strength of serving others. With over 18 years of experience in public health and mental wellbeing, she shared how listening and respect can bridge differences and build communities that truly care.
One line especially stayed with us: “No matter how small your voice is, keep speaking and doing what you believe in — because every act of persistence can help someone, and one day, society will return that kindness.”
That moment reminded us that influence doesn’t always come from volume, but from consistency and sincerity. She also reflected on her Chinese heritage — how her immigrant background shaped her deep appreciation for diversity and belonging.
To international students, she encouraged: “Even if your journey here is brief, see yourself as part of this home — participate, engage, and shine. ”Our third episode of the “Southern Hemisphere Observatory” podcast will feature this inspiring conversation — stay tuned on Xiaoyuzhou FM for its upcoming release.
